A Very Fine Regency Ormolu Mounted and Parcel Gilt Octagonal Rosewood Library Table, Attributed to Marsh and Tatham.
The octagonal well-figured tip up top above an ormolu-mounted frieze having four lion masks with rings on each of the smaller sides. With circular rosewood and a gilded column above an H-shaped stretcher on four-winged gilded paw feet. There are several very similar tables recorded, one formerly at Normanton Park, Rutland, and is illustrated in the Dictionary of English Furniture. The Normanton table differs by incorporating a book compartment in the frieze. Another in the Library at Woburn Abbey, Bedfordshire is almost identical apart from an ebonized moulding, which on our table has been executed in brass instead. A table formerly in Queen Victoria's bedroom at Windsor Castle shares the same winged giltwood paw feet as the previous examples but is resting on a triform base instead of a quatrefoil base. Its column, like that of all the other examples, is fluted and parcel gilt and is circular, with eight drawers in the frieze.
